Lions are noted for their worldwide efforts in reducing preventable blindness, a bold step taken by the Lions since that day when Helen Keller challenged the Lions to be “Knights of the blind in the crusade against darkness” .
Since 1990, Lion's SightFirst program has accomplished what few thought possible in controlling and in some places eliminating, the leading causes of unnecessary blindness.
Started with US$143 million raised by the Lions Campaign SightFirst was an extraordinary success. Among the various successes are:
and many more successes to be shared with you by our District Coordinator or Group Coordinators.
For District 308-A2, District Chairman Yong Mui Foh is the District Coordinator and the Group Coordinators are, Daisy Kon (Kuching City), Nancy Chai (Serian), Augustine Ngu (Sibu Berjaya), Mary Ding (Bintulu Kemena), Johnson Wee Peng Lam (Miri Mandarin), Dr. Mark Tan Min Yaw (Limbang Mandarin), Leena Toyoi (KK Penampang), Dennis Yee Kai Man (KK Mandarin), Dr. Gan Kean Siong (Keningau Mandarin), Peter Pang En Ying (Sandakan Selingan), and Paul Chiu Hung Siong (Tawau Central).
As for our Sector, Malaysia and Brunei , PCC Ellis Suriyati is the National/Multi National Coordinator and PDG Wong Chang Wai from 308-B1 is the Sector Coordinator covering the three districts of A2, B1 and B2.
As our fund for SightFirst is almost exhausted after 15 years, LCI is now launching the Campaign SightFirst II to raise an initial sum of US$150 million. For the next three years our Sector V-11A is expected to contribute US$2.0 million towards CSFII.
Though SightFirst was a huge success, there are still 37 million blind people in the world. If nothing is done, the experts predict that the blind population will double to 74 million by 2020.
Obviously our work is not finished. We call on all Lions to response positively to the Campaign and make it another record success.
The world looks to Lions as leaders in the international effort to eliminate avoidable blindness.
For District 308-A2, our commitment is to contribute at least RM840, 000 per year for the next 3 years. This target is achievable if every Lion take personal responsibility in ensuring its success.
With a membership of 1, 777 as at July 2005, contribution per member is only RM473.00.
How can the Club help?
To become a Model Club
As a Model Club, the total contribution is at least US$500 per member. However, this figure is used only to determine the contribution per club based on membership. It does not mean each member must pay US$500 from his/her pocket. The Club can raise fund to meet the commitment. The pledge is for a period of three years, if the Club chooses to pay in this manner.
